For six days, violent clashes occurred between law enforcement and the gay community in the nearby areas. Though raids like this were common at the time, this event sparked a series of riots in the neighborhood.
On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Inn, a gay club, was raided by the New York City Police. The month of June marks the celebration of Pride Month for the LGBTQ* community – an opportunity for our campus to understand and learn the importance of this occasion, as well as the resources the University of Kentucky has available for students, faculty and staff alike.
